Whether or not Tobey's performance was good is subjective. I didn't like it. I feel like he's got more dull surprise than Keanu Reeves, but that's just me...

Also, just for shits and giggle, it's common belief that the best take that is shot will be what makes it into the film.

You're insane. He was amazing in Spider-man 2. You're complaining about the script and the direction. Sam Raimi is known for very cartoony, over the top shots. Maguire's acting was great.
  • BaneBane Posts: 9,870 ✭✭✭✭✭
How about, instead of picking out shots you don't like that are because of the directing, look at the scene when Peter confesses that he's responsible for Ben's death. The acting is great. Tobey was fantastic and charming and full of heart in the Raimi movies. It's not even an opinion.
  • BaneBane Posts: 9,870 ✭✭✭✭✭

It says deleted scene, but it's not. Yeah, I fail to see how this is a bad performance. Sorry. I'll leave it alone and we'll just agree to disagree, but it truly does boggle the mind.
  • PhineasPhineas Posts: 1,759 ✭✭✭✭✭
If that's what you think, then that's what you think. My opinion is different.
And I wasn't picking out shots. I was referring to Tobey himself. That's one of many egregious examples of awful.

Can't wait for this, it looks so good! Andrew Garfield looks so much more like Spiderman than Tobey Maguire did.
Crazy opinions flying around here after the trailer. Look, Tobey was phenomenal as Peter. If you didn't like him, it was because of the script, not his performance. If you watch the films, he puts a hell of a lot of heart and soul into it.
I never said I didn't like him. I have always liked him in the role. I mean Andrew's physique is much closer to the original spiderman (he is more weedy whereas Toby was more stocky) and I love the wisecracks shown in the trailer.

  • BaneBane Posts: 9,870 ✭✭✭✭✭
Again it's only awful (at least to you) because of the DIRECTION. Sam Raimi is very much known for his eccentric and over the top shots like that. It was meant to be comical-- imagine that. It's not actually Tobey's performance that you dislike.
  • Darth LedgerDarth Ledger Posts: 5,867 ✭✭✭✭✭
You can dislike Tobey while still respecting his performance. I really like Emma Stone, she's been my favorite actress since Zombieland.

Another thing... How badass is this gonna be in 3D? It will feel like a roller coaster web slinging through the air with spidey

I wasn't talking about the directing or the shots. I. Am. Talking. About. Tobey. Damn. It. To. Hell.

And that scene you posted...I actually don't really find that all that special. It was good. But not 'phenomenal'.

It nails home the fact that we have 2 superhero movies this summer with a hardcore storyline and gritty plot while we have another superhero movie with smokes and bangs. If we are only comparing the trailers.

While I like the Spidey movies they have horrible scripts. Seriously. I tihnk my 12 year old brother could write better.

And Richard, how big is your sig, because every time I scroll past it the entire site freeze for a couple of seconds :/

Spider-man 1 and 2 had gorgeously written scripts that accented character development and told a warm story. Spider-man 3 did not.
  • BaneBane Posts: 9,870 ✭✭✭✭✭
Anyway, lots of weird, unjust hate for the first two films around these parts. I don't get it and I would love to see your 12 year old brother write a better screenplay than David Koepp and Alvin Sargeant so to each his own I guess. Probably not a good climate for me since I think very highly of the first two.

Spiderman 3 is like Phantom Menace in that regular people don't hate it near as bad as fans.

I loved Spiderman 3 until I read the comics lol

Script means little to me I was aggravated by the story. I didn't like having 2 1/2 villains... If he would have stuck with sandman and left out venom (thanks studio execs you bastards) then perhaps the movies emotional climax would have affected more people.

Yessss. I'm not the only one that didn't like Tobeys acting lol I didn't care for herpderp dunst either lol. I liked DaFoe a tremendous amount however and enjoyed Molina. The others well eh not so much lol. The actor is the one at fault for what they do on screen not the director...unless the film has a mad slasher mark day behind the editing booth :P But really the actor decides how to say something, do something, look or sound. The director can only ask them to do a certain something. They aren't the ones inside their minds forcing out the performance in a sort of possession lol

Bullshit alert. The "corny" moments of his acting are made intentionally corny by the director as well as the choice in camera angles/zoom-ins. The films are directed with a very cartoony and over the top mindset; they're intentionally comical in moments. It's just that nowadays audiences demand everything be dark and super serious. Filmmakers can't seem to have fun anymore, which is such a shame. Don't worry you lot that hates color and flavor in your performances, I'm sure Christian Bale has some top of the line stale work coming ahead in TDKR!

Anyway, I don't really have to defend it. Like most things that are good, there are always going to be a vocal minority of internet haters so yeah. Carry on. The reviews and general moviegoer reception told a much different tale when it opened in 2004.

Excuse me but take an acting class and learn it from the actors perspective as well as the directors point of view. Take both into consideration I am talking about his acting. Not camera movements. Not zoom shots. No the performance they conveyed. I didn't say they were cheesy but honestly the way they acted didn't impress me for a second. You can blow Toby mcgwires sack all you want but he all he was to me was a rehashed Keanu reeves in a different body.

Also, Kirsten Dunst was only bad in the third movie, but everything was bad about the third movie. She was fine in the first two.

Not in all cases and it depends on the director. In this case you're talking about Sam Raimi. Go check out his past filmography instead of telling me-- in a very cliche argument prop by the way-- to take an "acting class" to understand it. Fucking please, I know how it works, I've taken a plethora of film classes in college so let's not stir that pot. Anyway, check out Sam Raimi's past filmography. He's very much like Quentin Tarantino. He has a very particular relationship with his actors, and he commonly directs films that are intentionally over the top with incredibly cheesy moments. Tobey's performance follows that lead.

However, that's all I have to say about it because nothing is more irritating than arguing with someone who pulls the "take a class" card. It's one of the worst ways to go about a discussion.

Nope, it's not fact. In fact, nothing anyone ever says on the internet is, so why even have message boards? Nothing is fact, it's all opinions, so why even bother?

I mean how am I supposed to respond to this? But again, like I said above, I appreciate you flat out letting me know what kind of person I'm arguing with here-- it really helps in the long run. Also not sure how to take the whole "people like you" but I could totally swing that right back in your direction after some of your pathetically gradeschool comments.

That was intense as hell. My third most anticipated. HECK YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. The Lizard looks bad ass too. CANT WAIT!
  • This looks like crap compared to the original trilogy.
Tobey maguire is a great actor. He's. Just like bane said blame the script!

I didn't particularly find Tobey a great actor in the film either. :| Yes, he's a fantastic actor (who delivered a breathtaking performance in "Brothers") but I just didn't find him particularly amazing in those films. You can't always blame it on the script. Sometimes, actors just have high and low points in their careers.

Tobey was good in his role, but I feel Andrew will be better.

It must just be some kind of a coincidence that a lot of HPF people didn't like the movies. This is the first I've really seen people so down on Tobey and the screenwriting. The second film had a marvelous script and genuine emotion. So I don't get it.

Thanks exactly how I feel too. Garfield looks and sounds (from what I've seen in the trailers so far) how I pictured Peter Parker. Toby McGwire was a chode and well just didn't do it for me.

i love tobey. i really do...but andrew garfield just looks and feels better for me as spidey.

that being said, il NEVER take spidey away from tobey. He was great and i respect him in the movies, he hadsome bad moments but so does everyone really.
