Set in the late 21st century, the story follows the crew of the spaceship Prometheus as they explore an advanced alien civilization in search of the origins of humanity. Conceived as a prequel to Scott's 1979 science fiction horror film Alien, rewrites of Spaihts's script by Lindelof developed a separate story that precedes the events of Alien, but which is not directly connected to the films in the Alien franchise.

According to Scott, though the film shares "strands of Alien's DNA, so to speak", and takes place in the same universe, Prometheus will explore its own mythology and ideas.

Principal photography began in March 2011, with filming taking place in Canada, England, Iceland, Spain, and Scotland, mostly on practical sets. The film was shot entirely using 3D cameras and required no conversion in post-production.

Prometheus is scheduled for release on June 1, 2012 in the United Kingdom and June 8, 2012, in the United States and Canada. Scott has suggested that if the film is a success, he would be interested in pursuing sequels.

I just CANNOT believe we are getting a new film set in the ALIEN universe from Ridley Scott. The only reason I'm not looking forward to it as much as something like The Hobbit or TDKR is because it's getting a PG-13, which is just as criminal as the last DIE HARD having a PG-13 rating, and Scott's filmography has been very uneven since Gladiator.

STILL, it's Ridley Scott's first return to the genre in a very, very long time so he could sink back into it beautifully.

And yes, a trailer is on the way in the next few weeks-- days even. No one knows for sure, but the trailer did leak a week or two ago, so it's gotta be soon.

I've seen the leaked trailer and it is glorious. It really nails the atmosphere of the older films. It is a prequel and things look a bit "cleaner" and more high-tech, but the cinematography definitely evoked the old school ALIEN feel.

The best thing about Alien is that the movie doesn't get old! It's amazing. It is still fresh, terrifying, chilling. The best sci-fi/horror experience ever. I wish I could watch on a big screen. They could re-release it before Prometheus. :(

Alright, I see. It's been forever since I've seen Alien. I'm gonna have to re-watch it.

It will definitely connect to the story though, they're dodging an obvious bullet here. Look at the poster. The font on the title. The fact that parts of the ship in the original ALIEN were spotted in the bootleg trailer. It's also been at least nearly confirmed that xenomorphs do appear in the film.

So yes, it's a prequel to the original Alien and parts of the story will connect. I think it's going to be a standalone film with a similar feel and with its own story, but I think certain things about the story are going to directly tie in and even explain some stuff in the other films.
