Sorry but i need to start a discussion about this!
Really really sad that theres not even a hint of 'Leaving hogwarts' in the soundtrack!
It would have been the absolutle perfect way to round up the series!
A book end if you will!
A new beginning is lovely but its too gentle, I think the final track of the series needs to be grand, emotionalnd nostalgic and this just isnt doing it for me!
Lots of the new tracks are beautiful! But desplat IMO needed to pay homage to the first films!
Im hoping its just the viduct scene and not the epilogue!!
Whats weird about Desplats score is that it references a lot of Nicholas Hoopers stuff. I too felt that he needed to do what was right for the series and not for the film, just for that last track anyway. A few jingles for the last ever thing we hear?
Leaving Hogwarts has got to be the last thing we hear, it'll be seen as a disappointment to many if this is the last thing we ever hear from a Potter soundtrack, and incredible underwhelming to me, as Desplat is creative to the point of almost being the definition of it... this isn't creative enough.
I love the soundtrack samples, but count me in as one who is very underwhelmed with the "A New Beginning" sample. I wanted something melodious and soaring, not something similar to "The Kiss" (and I'm glad I'm not the only one who heard that!). I'm hoping a bit of Leaving Hogwarts (or something similar) will still be there and didn't make it onto the soundtrack since we already have it on the other soundtracks. It would just be so disappointing to hear this as the last bit of music, and it's hard to believe it will turn out like that. I mean, apparently they played it at the test screening with the final scene, so they must have wanted something similar to "Leaving Hogwarts." But keep in mind we still have 30 - 40 seconds that we haven't heard yet....
Well, 'Leaving Hogwarts' doesn't fit to the mood of the Epilogue scene. It's supposed to be gentle, soft, quiet and nostalgic. 'Leaving Hogwarts' is a bit bombastic and loud. Soaring and beautiful, yes, but it doesn't fit. BUT, I expect the final shot of the Epilogue (and the final 40 seconds of the track) to have this soaring feel because 'Leaving Hogwarts' DOES fit to the scene where the train starts leaving King's Cross. So, for the most part of the Epilogue scene we need something nice and soft but the very last 30-40 seconds need something grand. I think this is what's left from the sample.
Yeah, we're thinking alike, blackvenom. I don't mind the quiet, reflective stuff during dialogue. (MUST be that way, actually!) But I want Harry waving goodbye to something that feels an awful lot like the end of "Leaving Hogwarts." I have to believe the final notes we hear would be something as memorable as all the other movie endings have been; the endings have always been some of my very favorite tracks, and I can't believe it will be different this time!
It may be Hedwig's theme but a different variation of it. I'm sure that the very last shot (Trio and Ginny waving goodbye to their children and the train setting off) will have a very grand score, so yeah! These final 40 seconds may be this. :)
Meh I don't really care about Leaving Hogwarts. I prefer that the series plays out to a gentle, soothing theme. A New Beginning certainly has that "All was well" feeling nailed in a way Leaving Hogwarts wouldn't.
Yeah, just as the movie is entirely ruined because it doesn't end with Leaving Hogwarts, or something, is entirely your opinion so saying "we" want Leaving Hogwarts as if the whole fandom is behind you is unjustified.
I'm not that crazy over JW music... Hooper in HBP and Desplat in DH1 were my favorite scores. I hope the whole movie is a new compilation from Desplat.
"If you make yourself more than just a man... If you devote yourself to an ideal... You become something else entirely- A Legend."
But Leaving hogwarts is my childhood! Harry Potter is my childhood. I wanted one final homage to both before we leave the world forever! Thats not too much to ask surely!
Hes had 2 films to showcase his work, 1 tiny little 2 minute scene wouldnt have harmed!
I agree with blackvenom, the only place leaving hogwarts has in the epilouge is THE FINAL SHOT when the train rides away to Hogwarts. The rest is filled with the last conversation of the series and we need something gentle and soft to go with it, then for that last scene desplat can blast hedwigs theme like in leaving hogwarts for one last time. We have to wait for the full soundtrack to judge.
You can't just add in a piece which has no resonance to the score for the other 95% of the film. And I'm sure Lou can just create a fanmade piece and add in the track after the film comes out, can't he?
I'm listening to 'A New Beginning' right now. It's such such such a beautiful little track. It's nothing soaring and grand like 'Leaving Hogwarts' or 'Mischief Managed' or 'Lily's Theme' and all the stunningly breathtaking emotional tracks on DH2 and it doesn't have to be. The way it's building up, the soft melodic sounds, the very Benjamin Button-esque influence. It's short, sweet and simple. It fits the Epilogue scene perfectly. :)
I believe one shouldn't want a piece of music to make you feel a certain way, but they should let the music make you feel, with the expectation of how want to feel thrown out the window.
Why did Harry cross the Forbidden Forest? To get killed by ME!

We could do with a better sending off than this, though.
Guys. How do you know that Leaving Hogwarts fits the epilogue sequence if you haven't seen the movie and have no idea how the scene is going to be? Damn. Chill.

We are chilled, well, at least i am. I have a beer in hand to make sure of it.

They played it at the test screening with the epilogue, and apparently the whole audience was bawling. I'm not saying nothing else could work, but I just remain unimpressed with what I've heard in the sample. It's not bad, but I know Desplat can do better than that.
Edit: I don't know that it would be wise to use the exact music that ended the first two movies, but I was hoping for a "Desplat" version of it, ya know?

Then, judging by that test screening reaction, they could do know better than that, which is all good for a change.
Oops! Not sure if we're miscommunicating, Stafford, but I meant that they played Leaving Hogwarts with the Epilogue in the test screening and it worked beautifully. Is that what you meant, that they could do no better than "Leaving Hogwarts"? Wasn't sure since you said it's good (when apparently they've changed it). I was just sure they would use something close to it. But we'll see.
Yes, that is what i was talking about. What i meant by the 'all good' bit is that usually that means it isn't very good when they haven't changed something to benefit from the test screenings version.

Well, if that COS guy is legitimate , why is it no one has asked him if " Leaving Hogwarts ", or any variation thereof is heard at the end of the Epilogue ? Surely he would remember that if it has such an emotional impact on audiences ?

First thing I asked him was about the music. He hadn't listened to the soundtracks at that time, so he couldn't say.
But....would he not have recognized the melody of " Leaving Hogwarts " , even if he was not familiar with the title ? He wouldn't have needed to hear the new soundtrack piece just to recognize that would he ? Perhaps if the question was framed differently ?
Well, I don't want to exaggerate, but I do remember Gabby (wasn't that her name?) was asked if they played "Leaving Hogwarts" at the end of the test screening, and she said yes and that she burst into tears when she heard it. I believe it was also her who said so many people had cried in the movie (didn't she say Yates or Heyman turned around and was looking at everybody funny because they had been crying so much?). I don't know that it was specifically because of Leaving Hogwarts, but the point was that it worked very well with that scene. I just hoped they would use something with the same feeling, and "A New Beginning" is so quiet that it just doesn't have it.
It is strange that the COS guy didn't know about the music at the end!
