If you were one of the lucky sons of guns who was at Cannes this week, you're either too burned out from a week of partying on yachts, or you in fact do remember the sizzle reel from Django Unchained that The Weinstein Company showed for the assembled press. We read a lot of excited tweets and write-ups after that, and started getting excited ourselves, only to be hit with the cruel reality that Django Unchained doesn't come out until December 25, and it's going to be quite a while before we get a look at it ourselves.
But not all is lost! As soon as Friday, June 8, you can feel as fancy as those folks at Cannes, and catch what looks like an awesome sci-fi film while you're at it. Variety's Stuart Oldham is tweeting that "sources" have let him know that the first trailer for Django Unchained will run in front of Prometheus, the new Ridley Scott film that opens June 8. There's not an especially clear connection between the two films, beyond "two things the Internet is really, really excited about," but the Weinstein Company can't exactly wait to promote Django only in front of their own films, and Prometheus-- with its R rating and director pedigree-- is likely to bring in at least a somewhat similar crowd.
I'll be lucky enough to see Prometheus early at a press screening, but I'll also miss out on catching the Django trailer, so I'll be waiting patiently for it to finally make its way online. But the fact that the trailer is coming soon at all, a full six months before release, is good enough news as it is.
I'm skipping it. I'm sorry for the negativity, but it looks awful to the max.

So Crucify the ego, before it's far too late, to leave behind this place so negative and blind and cynical. And you will come to find that we are all one mind, capable of all that's imagined and all conceivable.

Kind of, yeah. I'm an off and on Tarantino fan and I have like the exact opposite opinions that other people do about his films.
I appreciate Pulp Fiction and I do like it, but I personally think it's a bit overrated. Some classic, memorable scenes and dialogue absolutely -- but it is far from my favorite of his.
Kill Bill on the other hand gave me maximum satisfaction in the early 2000's whereas some people would say that it's not nearly his best work. I disagree. I think they're fantastic.
Inglorious Basterds had good writing and amazing performances and a handful of memorable scenes, but it was just run of the mill Tarantino for me.
What made Kill Bill work was that underneath all the Tarantinoisms there was some real heart there. A great, strong leading character that you watch go through some appalling shit. It was a real character journey that paid off beautifully. Every other Tarantino flick absolutely lacks the charm and heart that Kill Bill had. On a surface level its a bunch of gratuitous violence and masturbatory cinematography, but it actually had people in it that I cared about.
I'd be hard pressed to find a character that I truly care about in any of his other movies.
Here's something the producer said that should tell you all about how slavery will be handled here:
"So we got into this whole debate about movies on this topic of slavery, and I was very frank about how I hated 90 percent of them. I thought they were cod liver oil movies that were — and when I say cod liver oil, I mean movies that taste bad — but you’re supposed to swallow it anyways, because it’s supposed to be good for you. I don’t understand how that works because if it’s not entertaining, if it’s not something you want to go see, why bother, because no one’s going to see it. And I just felt like these movies should be exciting, they should be action-packed and most of all, I felt like they should have plenty of kicking ass because at the end of the day, the world needs black people who fought back."
