While all the other Patronuses seen on-screen were completely computer-generated effects, Snape’s Patronus required a practical effect so that it would cast light on the trees and leaves as it leads Harry through the forest. Chief animal handler Gary Gero drapes a suit of battery-charged LEDs over an Irish wolfhound so the artists could composite the glow from the LEDs with the CGI doe.
